More About Southern Pointe

The Texas World Speedway was built by American Raceway Inc. founder, Larry LoPatin. It was the sixth superspeedway built in the USA.

Before Southern Pointe

A Motorsport Premier Venue

The Texas World Speedway is located in College Station, Texas, in part due to its location. Now Southern Pointe Community sits closely centered between Houston and Austin, TX.

The nearest major airport is George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, around 85 miles from the track. Austin-Bergstrom is a bit further away at around 111 miles.

The template for The Texas World Speedway was taken from the Michigan International Speedway. The D-shaped oval featured multiple configurations just as its sister track.

The circuit was brought into the 1990s by Ishin Speed. Eventually, Texas World Speedway came into the ownership of property developer Bill Mather and the Southern Pointe Community was birthed.

A Circuit Built For Record Speed

Several speed records were set at the Texas World Speedway. This in part was due to the track design. Although the track mirrored the 2.0-mile outline and length of Michigan International Speedway and the 12-degree front stretch paving angle, the Texas World Speedway had the steeper banks through the turns at 22 degrees and a more shallow backstretch at two degrees.

Some noteworthy records include:

A world closed-course speed record of 214.158 mph set by Mario Andretti. A record that stood in the Guinness Book of World Records for twelve years.

An unofficial closed-course speed record was set by Jeff Andretti on February 3, 1993, for Indycars of 234.5 mph in a Lola-Buick, the fastest speed ever recorded at Texas World Speedway.

“We blew up 17 cars, and one of ’em was Robert Earl Keen’s. So Woodstock was nothing,”

-Willie Nelson

Quote from The Eagle in Bryan-College Station in 1999 just after Woodstock ’99.
